I was on my way to Golden Bay for an assignment when my friend Paul got a text alerting him to a potential whale stranding on Farewell Spit. We made a quick detour to the local hardware store to grab some buckets and gunned it out to Puponga at the base of the spit. We quickly changed into our togs and started the 5km walk out to the stranding site.

These are the photographs I captured over the afternoon as volunteers battled to help rescue the stranded pilot whales.
